The law department is divided into two divisions – civil and criminal. The civil division is responsible for a wide variety of civil legal matters for the city, and also provides assistance and support to the criminal division. The law director is an elected position established by the City Charter. Functions of the law director and law department include:

  • Attendance at City Council meetings
  • Attendance at Council Committee meetings
  • Preparation of City Ordinances & Resolutions
  • Approval of contracts, lease agreements, etc.
  • Handle all lawsuits involving the City
  • Provide all department heads with legal advice and assist with day to day operation of departments
  • Criminal Division - prosecutes all cases in Lima Municipal Court

Claim Process

To begin a claim process with the city, please complete the claim information form. You will be notified by mail of the date and time of the meeting for your claim. You are invited to attend if you have any additional information to present, however it is not necessary that you do so. Once a decision has been reached, you will receive a letter from the City advising you of the result, usually within 10-14 days after the meeting.
